Relocating to Athens

Moving to Athens from Canada is moving from the Great White North to the land of ancient gods and sun. Athens, Greece, is a city of stunning historical significance and vibrant modern life. Planning ahead makes a big difference. Bekins Worldwide, using its decades of international move experience and expertise, is here to help you, with both the best time of year to move and what to expect on the day you move into your new residence.

While the idea of escaping Canadian winter for year-round sun is enticing, the best time to move to Athens is early fall, from September through October. The weather is warm and pleasant without the scorching heat of July and August, that often exceeds 35°C (95°F), and when many locals escape to the islands. It’s also a great way to avoid: the heat caused brownouts and the massive tourist crowds. The low season, from November to March, is an option if you don’t mind cooler, rainy weather, when the city has a more relaxed pace and is with lower prices.

Moving day can be stressful, even in Athens, so there are a few things to keep in mind. Be prepared for intense traffic congestion, especially in the city center. Parking is a significant challenge, as many Athenians live in apartment buildings with limited parking. You should also be aware of the city’s infrastructure. Unexpected water shut-offs occur and the air conditioning in many buildings may not be as powerful as what you’re used to in Canada, especially during the summer heatwaves. It’s also wise to get used to the idea of not flushing toilet paper, as the sewage pipes are often too narrow to handle it. Bureaucracy in Greece is notoriously slow and heavily reliant on in-person visits. Lastly, Greeks love to talk—especially about politics, food, and family. While English is widely spoken, especially among younger people, learning a few basic Greek phrases will go a long way in making connections.

NOTE: Greeks don’t actually call themselves “Greeks.” The term “Greek” comes from the ancient Romans. In their own language, the locals refer to themselves as Hellenes (Έλληνες) and their country as Hellas (Ελλάς) or Ellada (Ελλάδα). You will also often see the country officially referred to as the “Hellenic Republic.” While people will understand if you call them Greeks, using the term Hellenes is a nod to their rich history and a mark of respect for their cultural heritage.

Moving from Canada’s wide-open spaces to Athens’ dense and buzzing neighborhoods is a big adjustment, yet a very exciting leap into history, sunshine, and a completely different lifestyle.
